Chair: Daniel R. Bush
Co-Chairs: Lee Sommers, Ken Reardon, and Stephan Weiler
Sponsored by the Office of the Vice President of Research
Developing a sustainable program that satisfies our energy needs while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and
atmospheric CO2 levels has emerged as one of the major challenges of the 21st century. It seems clear a multi-pronged
approach incorporating a variety of novel production systems, conservation, and increased efficiency are needed to solve
this daunting problem. One of the hottest areas of new promise is using biomass as a renewable source of biofuels to help
meet our energy needs. Substantial investments in biofuel research and production are sweeping the nation, and CSU has
established a significant presence in this arena through recent collaborative funding success with federal agencies and
private industry. In light of these exciting events, CSU is organizing a symposium that focuses on the challenges and
opportunities in biofuel production. Speakers will be CSU faculty that are currently active, or will be shortly, in
biofuels research.
Technical breakthroughs are needed in a variety of areas before biofuels have a substantial impact on energy utilization
and global climate change. CSU is uniquely positioned, with expertise in agriculture, plant biotechnology, engineering,
environmental science and economics, to make transforming contributions. Together, CSU researchers will help Biofuels
achieve a positive impact on atmospheric CO2 levels, be cost competitive with gasoline and diesel, provide a new source
of revenue for farmers, provide air quality benefits, and offer land-use benefits. The goal of the Biofuels Colloquium is
highlight current research activity and catalyze new initiatives in biofuels research.
The colloquium is designed to benefit investigators with research activities that could be applied to Biofuels but
have not received Biofuels funding as well as researchers with established Biofuels programs. Individuals at energy,
agriculture, and investment companies interested in learning more about research activities in Biofuels should plan to
attend.
